THE FOURTH LARGEST ISLAND IN THE WORLD lies off the southeast coast of Africa. It is twice the size of Arizona. The Malagasy people are of mixed Malayo-Indonesian and African-Arab ancestry.


MADAGASCAR HAS a population more than 18 million - 41% are Christian and 7% Muslim Lutherans comprise almost 17% of the nation The president of Madagascar is Lutheran and Lutherans fill many positions of national leadership. All this without having or needing leadership training institutes. Praise God! Other church bodies include Roman Catholic, Anglican and Reformed The official languages are Malagasy and French.


The Rev. Dr. Modeste Rakoto is the President of the Malagasy Lutheran Church (FLM).


CLEF IS PLEASED TO WORK WITH the FLM. This Lutheran Church has a confessional Lutheran president Over 2½ million members (it is larger than the LCMS) - over 100 years of history 6,000 congregations (the largest with more than 6,000 members) 1500 Pastors (some pastors oversee 6 parishes) Six regional seminaries that offer a bachelor’s degree A graduate seminary • Trained Evangelists and Catechists help with Christian Education in congregations • It operates 42 clinic / hospital / medical / dental facilities.

Dr. Schell

Dr. Steven Schell, a Lutheran dentist from Minneapolis, accompanied CLEF Pres. Rev. John Fehrmann to Madagascar. Pastor Fehrmann served Dr. Schell as his dental assistant.


Dr. Schell worked in FLM dental clinics and at “the end of the road” in the mountains. The CLEF works to assist Lutheran laity to do good works throughout the world.
